Here we go – the workshop on Houdini. In the series of tutorials I will be introducing you to the app from a standpoint of “I have no idea what is going on”. This is a beginner-friendly course on Houdini, so you will not have to consider throwing your computer out of the window, or sitting there watching me typing walls of code text. Surprise!
In the first lesson I will show you the basics of UI, navigation, some useful shortcuts and all that – so that when we proceed further everyone will be on the same page.
I know it’s super boring, but nothing is as frustrating as getting lost in the buttons. So, let’s begin, shall we?

Copying things – how hard can that be? Apparently, you have to know a bit of some trickery to make copying geometry elegant, fast, and procedural.
We will tackle a problem of orienting things the way they were supposed to be or how you would expect. Then, we discuss how to orient copies after we scatter points on geometry.
It’s a good things to know and know how to control if you were to create scenes that contain lots of copies, and it will give us the needed knowledge for our projects to come.

I’ve heard this many times: Houdini modeling is not great, or “stay away from it”, and even worse versions of this notion. In this episode we will dive straight into various modeling techniques, and see for ourselves whether Hoduini can deliver. Spoiler alert – it totally does.
We will talk about Polywire, PolyExtrude, PolyBevel nodes. Look at combining those. Beveling edges as well as points, even on curves. Some curve resampling, mirror and split functions, converting to VDB and back again to smooth geo, and that’s not all – it’s a long list.
In fact, I’ll show you a procedural way of modeling with curves, which I personally like a lot. Stay tuned for more!
