SideFX Houdini – Ultimate Terrain Workflow _ Part01 – Concept, file organization, heightfield setup

I have been working on a terrain workflow in Houdini 18 for my shortfilm, I have a lot of huge landscape to generate with very little resources. So it was important for me to find way to optimize the creative process while maintaining production quality.
I learned so much experimenting with it, I figured I could share a series of tutorials about environment and why not getting you excited about making terrains in Houdini !

In this video I am walking you through the node network, and try to show you an optimized way to approach a large scene.
Also breaking down the different steps of making the base for the main terrain in foreground.

I will show next how to generate a tool to convert a curve into a dune thanks to some sweep operations.

I have been working on a terrain workflow in Houdini 18 for my shortfilm, I have a lot of huge landscape to generate with very little resources. So it was important for me to find way to optimize the creative process while maintaining production quality.

In this video I am breaking down how I generated dune driven by curves. We are using a bunch of different techniques like sweep operation, pointvop network to reach the desired result.

I will show next how to create the volcanic wall on top of that ridge.

SideFX Houdini – Ultimate Terrain Workflow _ Part04 – Epic Atmospheric Lighting with Mantra

I have been working on a terrain workflow in Houdini 18 for my shortfilm, I have a lot of huge landscape to generate with very little resources. So it was important for me to find way to optimize the creative process while maintaining production quality.

In this 4th part we start getting into the look development and lighting of this project. I am here sharing my process to set up a lighting for large scale environment and create effects such as fog and some kind of atmospheric perspective using Houdini’s render engine : Mantra.

SideFX Houdini _ Substance Painter tutorial – Terrain Export and texturing

In this 5th part we are digging into the texturing and more specifically real-time environment. Let me tell you first what we will cover and what we won’t.

We’ll start by preparing our terrain for textures in Houdini with the help of some of my AL-Tools. My goal is to show you how to prepare it for games and realtime.

If you got my Project files on my store, you probably noticed that I went fully procedural with mantra surface shaders. I may talk about that in an other tutorials, but due to hardware limitation I’d rather show you first the whole process in substance painter… and also because.. it’s really fun !

So I am sharing how I prepare the terrains, bake textures and generate a sweet look with Substance painter tools. No megascan or any external resources, My goal is mostly to show how to make a decent lookdev base working across several UDIM tiles and organize the layers so you can add more detail later on with fancier material if you like.

Big thanks to Adobe substance and SideFX support ! By the way adobe substance is giving out one more month trial for freelancers and personal projects. No excuse you should try this out ! 😉
