The Story:
From NBC’s TV show Timeless, the time machine (a.k.a. Lifeboat) has been left in the woods for years that plantation has grown over it. In this shot, it starts revolving its rusty outer rings, clearing the foliage and kicking up dirt in the process.
Effects Animation breakdown:
All the FX were done in Houdini.
1- Building the plant:
1-a) The trunks were procedurally created by drawing lines on top of the time machine. Then branches are added, and together with the trunks are surfaced to take the final look.
1-b) Previously created bushes are instanced over the branches randomly.
2- Simulation and Animation:
2-a) Simulation was done in stages, each stage is layered on top of the previous one. The first stage is the trunks, simulated via Finite Element Solver to allow for Soft Body Dynamics and tearing. The actual simulation was done on a tetrahedralized version of the trunks.
2-b) Twigs are then attached to the branches and through a custom made process, they sway back and forth using a spring effect, conveying the bouncy motion.
2-c) Leaves are later attached to the twigs.
2-d) Some of the twigs detach from the main body, those ones go through a RBD Solver to bounce freely in the environment.
2-e) Some of the leaves detach from the twigs, and enter a Particle simulation.
3- Secondary Effects:
3-a) Dirt is done using Particles and Grain Solver.
3-b) Pyro was used for the dust.
3-c) Dead leaves and twigs falling on the ground were simulated via RBD Solver.
